Have you heard of the annual Frisco Gold Rush? It’s the longest-running Nordic event in Colorado and takes place every year in Frisco, Colorado. This year marks the 48th year of the event and it takes place on Saturday, February 3rd.
The event brings the history of Frisco to life and celebrates the towns mining heritage and the Nordic culture. Every year they celebrate the Frisco Gold Rush with both classic and skate races open to the public, for all ages and any abilities. Young or old, active or not, there’s a competition for you! Even the young kids can get into the action!
The day’s events start at 9:00am when the 20k Skate Ski starts, followed by the 10k Classic and Skate Ski start a half hour later at 9:30am. If you’re looking for something a bit more fun, the 5k Fun Ski Classic and Skate Ski starts at 10:00am and the Kids Ski run at 10:15.
The Classic skiing is just that, the classic style that most people have seen, but skate skiing is a newer form that’s gained some popularity, especially in competition. The Skate style gets its name because it works similar to roller skates or ice skates, and you push off of them rather than a walking/running motion.
No matter which style you choose, the fun doesn’t stop after the skiing is over. Join your friends and family at the Frisco Nordic Center for a post-race party, where you can enjoy refreshments, see all the awards, and take place in some getaways! The first 250 people to register will get a commemorative hat and awards will be given to the top 3 women and men for each race, as well as the top person in the different age groups overall. If you’re over 21 you’ll also be able to grab yourself a free beer from Outer Ranger Brewing Co.
Later that night, the first annual Eat, Ski, & Be Merry event, hosted by SNSC, will take place, starting at the Frisco Peninsula. This is a fun event for the whole family where you can ski or snowshoe along the Frisco Peninsula along fire lit routes and enjoy amazing bonfires along the way. At the end of the trail, you’ll reach the Frisco Day Lodge and be greeted with music, drinks, food, and a silent auction.
Tickets for these events are on sale and if you buy your tickets now you’ll save some money, but they will also be available on the day of the event. If you’re considering a table at the Eat, Ski, & Be Merry event, be sure to check out more information to reserve your table.
